Isabella Products intros cellular-connected Vizit photo frame

There's certainly no shortage of internet-connected digital photo frames out there, but those looking for a truly out-of-the-box experience may want to keep an eye out for Isabella Products' new Vizit frame, which ditches the usual WiFi and Ethernet in favor of a more convenient (and more expensive) cellular connection. Unfortunately, Isabella Products doesn't seem ready to get too specific with things just yet, with it only saying that the frame boasts a "high resolution" 10.2-inch touchscreen, and that it'll be tied to the as yet non-existent

Researchers tout spreadable, self-powered OLEDs

It looks like we could one day be buying our OLED displays by the jar or the bucket-full, at least if some researchers from Sumitomo Chemical and Mitsubishi Chemical have their way. They're now working on what they describe as "spreadable" OLEDs, which could either be spread or "painted" on virtually any surface, leaving an OLED screen that would be just 100nm thick. As if that wasn't enough, the spreadable concoction would also double as a solar panel that'd keep the OLEDs powered, something that's apparently possible due to the "similar, but opposite, principles" that OLEDs and solar cells work on. What's more, while the two companies are apparently still in the early stages of research, they say they're aiming to have usable prototypes ready within the next two years.

E-Ink to introduce new segmented display cell displays

E-Ink has a new display made available last week, based on segmented display cell (SDC) technology. Apparently the new screens are 40% thinner and have increased flexibility over E Ink's previous displays, and can now be formed in "organic non-rectangular unique shapes, including holes, curves, and other non-standard designs". Delphi's already picking up use of the display for future keyfob products -- always good to know there are consumer applications right around the corner.

Hans Tan's LED clock spells out time in text

Those tried-and-true hands definitely get the job done, but glancing over to find out what time of the day it is should be an adventure. Singaporean Hans Tan has crafted quite the atypical timepiece with his Idea of a Clock (revision 2), which utilizes a LED bulletin board to spell out the time in text rather than using symbols, numbers or long sticks. Best of all, those interested in making the act of watching time go by somewhat enjoyable can order one from the artist himself, but considering the limited edition nature of the piece, we wouldn't waste too much time waffling over pulling the trigger.
